Mental Health Is Not a Luxury, It's a Necessity

2026-11-06

We tend to treat our minds like phones, only noticing them when the battery is nearly dead. We push through the tiredness, laugh off the worry, and say “I’m fine” so often that the words stop meaning anything.

But a mind is not a luxury to be looked after when life gets quiet. It is the foundation everything else stands on. Our work, our relationships, our dreams, and our ability to show up for others all rest on it. A healthy mind builds a healthier, happier, and more productive you.

So let’s talk about it.

Managing stress doesn’t mean never feeling pressure. It means finding healthy ways to carry it, such as a walk, a prayer, music, or a conversation. Choosing happiness doesn’t mean ignoring pain. It means training our eyes to also see the good that is still there. Building self-esteem is simply learning to believe in ourselves, even on the days the world is loud with doubt.

The two that matter most are seeking support and practicing calm. Talk to someone you trust. Breathe. Rest. Take the break before the break takes you.

Not every smile means someone is okay. Some of the people laughing loudest in the room are carrying the heaviest loads. So check on your friends, especially the strong, quiet ones. And when they speak, listen without judging. Sometimes the most healing thing you can offer is not advice, but presence.

This matters deeply where I live and work in Kenya, where so many young men, and boys especially, are taught to be silent. We are told to “man up,” to endure, and to never show weakness. But silence is not strength. It is a weight, and too many carry it alone.

Asking for help is strength, not weakness. It takes more courage to say “I’m struggling” than to pretend you’re not.

So here is my invitation. Speak openly about mental health, at home, in church, in the matatu, in the group chat, and on this page. Break the silence, one honest conversation at a time.

Your mind matters. You matter. Together, we thrive.
